MUSIC: FIMI SETS UP ITALY'S FIRST EVER DIGITAL RANKINGS

****

(AGI) - Rome, Apr 10
Italy's first ever online music sales billboard starts today. Developed by Nielsen Soundscan - providers of such services in the US - the rankings were solicited by the Italian Music Industry Federation (FIMI), as a means to provide both media and the industry a clearer picture of the online music industry. "Digital music is increasingly successful even in our country, says FIMI president Enzo Mazza. "So much so, that during 2005 some 14 million songs were bought in digital format, accounting for 4 pc of the domestic market, marking an 11.6m euro turnover and set to grow further during 2006".

Nielsen SoundScan's rankings are based on a panel of internet websites: Apple ITunes Italy, 105 Megastore, 105 Classic Megastore, Coca Cola Music Store, MSN Music Club Italy, MTV Digital Downloads Italy, Radio Montecarlo Megastore, Tiscali Italy, United Music Megastore, Media World Net Music. According to Mazza, "Quite soon, others will come onboard and we hope that mobile phone operators provide their data on rankings as to achieve further integration between channels".

Worldwide digital music sales marked 1.1b USD sales (6 pc of music industry turnover); internet and mobile phone music sales accounted for the sale of 470m songs sold, off 190 websites throughout Europe; more than 500 thousand different tracks.
